Case studies
We are actively recruiting partners to work on specific public-realm problems - building evidence, testing approaches, and sharing what works.
FixASB is actively recruiting partners to work on specific public-realm problems. Together we can capture structured evidence, test proportionate responses, and develop practice that other places can learn from.
Below are the problem settings we are prioritising. If your organisation is responsible for one of these environments - or works closely with those who are - we would like to hear from you.
Car parks and industrial estates
Shared vehicle and employment spaces where problems often concentrate after hours.
Common issues we expect to see
- Late-night congregation, intimidation, and disorder in poorly overlooked parking areas
- Fly-tipping, abandoned vehicles, and waste dumping on estate service roads
- Vandalism to lighting, barriers, and commercial premises
- Drug-related activity and unsafe behaviour that deters workers and legitimate users
- Blurred accountability between landowners, private security, councils, and police
Retail parks and shopping parades
High-footfall commercial frontages where persistent issues affect traders and visitors alike.
Common issues we expect to see
- Street drinking, loitering, and intimidation around entrances and seating
- Shoplifting-linked disorder and aggressive begging that spill into public areas
- Graffiti, damage to shop fronts, and misuse of alleyways or service yards
- Noise, litter, and anti-social behaviour after trading hours
- Fragmented response across retailers, BIDs, landlords, local authorities, and police
National parks and forestry
Protected landscapes and woodland where shared enjoyment depends on respectful use.
Common issues we expect to see
- Illegal camping, fires, and damage to habitats or visitor facilities
- Fly-tipping and littering on trails, car parks, and scenic viewpoints
- Off-road vehicle misuse and unauthorised access to sensitive areas
- Anti-social gatherings that intimidate other visitors and local communities
- Wide geography that makes patterns harder to evidence without structured reporting
Railway network and infrastructure
Stations, approaches, and lineside spaces that serve thousands of people every day.
Common issues we expect to see
- Intimidation, harassment, and disorder on platforms, underpasses, and station approaches
- Graffiti, vandalism, and damage to shelters, lifts, and waiting areas
- Trespass, trackside anti-social behaviour, and unsafe activity near infrastructure
- Substance misuse and rough sleeping in and around station environments
- Complex multi-agency ownership across operators, Network Rail, BTP, and local partners
Tower blocks and housing estates
Shared residential spaces where neighbours live with the impact of persistent problems.
Common issues we expect to see
- Communal-area disorder, intimidation, and misuse of stairwells, lifts, and courtyards
- Noise, youth-related anti-social behaviour, and repeat hotspot activity
- Drug dealing or use in shared spaces that undermines residents' sense of safety
- Damage to doors, lighting, play areas, and other shared facilities
- Residents feeling unheard when issues persist across housing providers, councils, and police
What we are looking for in case study partners
Partners who want to resolve problems in practice - and help others learn from what works.
-
Committed to resolving the issues
Ready to treat persistent problems as actionable, not inevitable - and to stay engaged while evidence, response, and follow-up take shape.
-
Open to problem-solving approaches
Willing to consider proportionate enforcement, partnership working, mediation, and other constructive options informed by a clearer picture of scale, impact, and nature.
-
Helping develop effective practice
Keen to help shape approaches that others can learn from - so progress in one place can inform better outcomes elsewhere.
If that sounds like your organisation, get in touch via our contact form and tell us about the setting you work in and the outcomes you want to achieve.
